Swisher LSRB87528 Log Splitter Review

As with all things in life, you get what you pay for. The Swisher LSRB87528 is no different. It is near the upper end of the price spectrum of all those we’ve reviewed, but at 28 tons it has the second highest amount of splitting force. There isn’t anything this log splitter can’t handle, and with the towing ability and the flexibility to split in both horizontal and vertical positions, it offers almost endless wood splitting possibilities.

When the Swisher LSRB87528 is delivered, it comes in a very large, heavy wooden crate. We’d recommend thinking about getting hold of a forklift or a tractor for the day of delivery to make sure that you’re not hindered before you even begin. Remember that once you’ve unpacked the wood splitter, some assembly is required, but a mechanic should find this very simple.

Once it gets started, this gas powered log splitter is extremely powerful. Its 28 tons of force power through anything, even very knotty cross grain. We liked the option of switching between horizontal and vertical splitting positions, which is something that’s very rare with cheaper electric, hydraulic or manual log splitters. The engine starts every time, and although it isn’t the fastest splitter in the world, you can’t doubt its strength.

We expected to be clearing split pieces every few seconds with a log splitter this powerful, but we were pleasantly surprised. The log cradles mean that you don’t have to bend down constantly, making it comfortable to use, reducing strain on the back and shoulders.

Like the Champion 25-Ton log splitter, this beast can be towed on public highways. It’s easy to hitch and the tires are good and rugged, so out of all the log splitters that we’ve tried, this is one of the easiest to transport. This is really important for a piece of kit which weighs almost 600 pounds.

Our only point of frustration was that when it came to draining the engine, the plug was difficult to access. This was merely an awkward factor which a simple, different design would eliminate, but it doesn’t affect the functioning of the wood splitter at all.
