How To Choose A Stackable Laundry Set
Stackable washers and dryers are the perfect way to clear up some space in your laundry room. But how do you know what is the best stackable washer and dryer set for you?
The first step is to know what you want or need in your washer/dryer combination. Are you buying for a family who needs a machine to handle larger loads? Or maybe you have kids who are prone to playing in the mud and inviting tough stains?
Stackable laundry sets have different specifications and strengths–from high-powered wash cycles to large load capacities. It’s best to understand what your priorities are before purchase.
Let’s start with the basics though.
What Is A Stackable Laundry Set?
Stackable laundry sets are made up of a washer and dryer, and sometimes other add-ons. Washer/dryer combinations aren’t anything new, but stackable sets are still quite recent.
This is because both machines are heavy and complex pieces of equipment, which need to be modified in order to stand on top of the other. Stackable laundry sets also mean that both the washer and dryer need to be front-loading, for easy access and retrieval.
What About Capacity?
Capacity is one of the first things you’ll look at. Usually measured in cubic feet, it can be difficult to understand what that means in terms of laundry. Some brands will further explain their load capacity in comparison with items like bedding and towels. For example, the Kenmore Smart system is a massive 5.2 cubic feet. Kenmore explains this to be about 28 large towels or big enough to fit a King-size bedding set in a single load.
On the other hand, while Frigidaire’s Laundry Centre only has a 3.8 cubic feet washer capacity, this is still enough to do ‘three days’ laundry’ in one load. Generally speaking, a good load capacity is anywhere between 3.5-5.5 cubic feet.
It’s also worth saying that load capacities mostly refer to the washer, since this is the machine which will have a smaller cubic foot capacity. Many dryer combinations will have different load capacities, even for the same model, but don’t worry–it’s necessary. Your dryer load capacity needs to be bigger than the washer’s since your clothes will expand when drying and they need the larger space.
What Is A Stacking Kit?
Next thing to know is if you will need to buy a separate stacking kit. Stackable washer sets aren’t as simple as they might look; you can’t just plonk one on top of the other and hope for the best stackable washer dryer for your money.
In many cases, even if the products are made by the same brand, you will need a separate stacking kit in order to safely install the products. This is to ensure the washer/dryer sets don’t bounce, make too much noise, or accidentally separate and fall during use. It also protects the equipment from damaging itself–remember, these machines can weigh up to a total 550 pounds! Add to that a vigorous wash cycle, and I wouldn’t want it to sit on me without some protection, either.
Stackable Vs. Pre-stacked
This is mostly a matter of convenience and cost. Many pre-stacked laundry sets are more expensive for their added convenience. However, this is rarely much more than what it would cost you in labor if you have no experience.
If you enjoy the challenge, then you may be able to save a pretty penny by buying separately and then stacking yourself. The same goes for add-ons like pedestals.
One reviewer saved almost $600 dollars on installation by doing it himself. However, he had plenty of experience to back it up and I wouldn’t recommend this for most people. I don’t need to remind you again how heavy these things are, and they can be very difficult to manoeuvre through the house, let alone install.
How Much Is A Stackable Washer And Dryer?
Stackable washer and dryer sets can cost anything from $1000-$3500+. While the initial purchase and set-ups cost can be a hefty fee, it’s also worth considering how energy efficient your laundry set will be. Considering many machines are built to last 10 years or more, this can really add up to make a significant difference in overall price.
How Wide Is A Stackable Washer And Dryer?
Washer dryer combinations from the same brand try to be identical in their dimensions, however this is not the case between companies. Washers and dryers typically range from 25-30+ inches in width.
How Tall Is A Stackable Washer And Dryer?
Some full size stackable washer and dryer sets can go as high as 7 feet! This is obviously not ideal, unless you happen to play in the NBA or would like to do your washing on a stepladder. It’s important to try and see how high your washer and dryer will be when stacked together, before making a purchase. Too many people disregard this fact, and are surprised when the top machine’s buttons are uncomfortably high or almost out of reach.
That being said, most stackable laundry sets are less than 80 inches tall. I prefer these dimensions for the best stackable washer dryers.
How Deep Are Stackable Washer And Dryers?
This is important for both capacity and space concerns. The depth of your actual washer’s load capacity will be described in cubic feet, so be sure to take note of that.
For spacing and fitting issues in your home, most stackable laundry sets will be between 28-35+ inches deep (sometimes written as length). This figure is also given, occasionally, with a ‘door open length’, which can be useful for knowing how long your system will be when opened.
Do Stackable Washers And Dryers Have To Be Stacked?
No. Stackable washers and dryers that are bought separately do not need to be stacked and can rest side by side.
Laundry systems which are built together or come pre-stacked may need some more fiddling to work unstacked.
To be sure, ask about your product before purchasing; if it is pre-stacked, and if it can be dismounted easily.
How Much Is A Used Stackable Washer And Dryer?
Washers and dryers that receive frequent usage can undergo a heavy load. For that reason, before buying a stackable washer and dryer second-hand, it’s important to know how much it has already been used. Like a new car, these laundry systems devalue very quickly–if you are willing to risk it, or are buying from a trusted friend, you might be able to get a used laundry set for under $700.
